Housing Minister: Government will achieve PMAY Target Before 2022

News

Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs stated that the Narendra Modi-led Central Government will complete its target of PMAY [Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna] even before its deadline year that is 2022.

The minister was replying on the media reports which said that the work on affordable housing scheme is going too slow. Hardeep Singh Puri also informed the house that the Government is working at a steady speed under its PMAY Scheme and 4.5 million homes will be sanctioned under the same scheme by the end of March.

Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs was quoted, “I see the scheme progressing at a fantastic rate. I often come across narratives which are ill-informed, without any basis. On the issue of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, our assessment is that we need to build 11 million homes by 2022.”

Hardeep Singh Puri also brought attention to the issue of building home shelters for the homeless and said that he is working closely with the concerned ministry and as we are yet to achieve the success which should have met by now about the home shelters for homeless people in the urban areas. He further added that some State Governments are responsible for the slow progress of this issue and has appealed all stakeholders to work upto the best of their abilities for building home shelters.

Earlier last year, the Hon’ble Supreme Court had directed Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and West Bengal to come up with the roadmap implementation Programme for making home shelters as it is the Government’s responsibility to provide a home to homeless poor people.

All the three states filled affidavits on their part for the implementation of National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) scheme but they didn’t submit the roadmap for the same.
