New Town, which is the first green-rated satellite city in Kolkata, added another feather to its cap after receiving a Gold certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for Master Plan and Design under the Green Cities Rating. The Chairman & Managing Director at HIDCO (West Bengal Housing & Infrastructure Development Corporation), Debashis Sen has received the certificate in an award ceremony took place recently.
Speaking at the occasion, Debashis Sen said, “New town offers a fusion of contemporary and smart technologies with ancient architectural concepts and principles as per HIDCO. Further, the State Government in Kolkata remains firmly committed towards the development of a greener city overall.”
New Town has all the features which fulfill the criteria for this award. Some of the important areas which attracted IGBC includes electric buses, advanced machines for solid waste management and cleaning roads, app-based cycles on offer for the whole city, solar PV for canals and ample open and green spaces for the general public. Apart from these the added FAR (Floor Area Ratio) has also boosted the concept of green building construction in the area.
A rapidly developing suburb in Kolkata, New Town is located partly in North 24 Parganas district and South 24 Parganas district. In recent times, the area has emerged as one of the fastest growing real estate markets among others in Kolkata. The locality is well-connected to Kolkata and adjoining areas via VIP Road and is just 4 kilometers from the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.
